How can anyone say we have PLENTY of players with class and physicality?? we have a small few in each category, with an even smaller overlap!! It's not just us though, it's the same for lots and lots of rural GAA clubs. It's true, we haven't earned the right to play Intermediate football - but that's no reason to drop down - afterall did we not ask to drop out of intermediate football a few years back?? we're entitled to play at this level and it's not all that unbelievably tough is it?? Like any other club, if we can get 15, 20 or more lads down training regularly we will definitely be competitive. Training has generally been a disgrace the last few years, so is it amy wonder we have generally struggled in the championship? We need all hand on deck, that has always been a requirement for Barrowhouse to achieve anything, as we are a small area. We need to get lads living away from the area to come back and train and play and be part of the team. This will only happen if there is something worthwhile to turn up for - ie meaningful well-attended training sessions with big numbers and a good standard. I worked in Dublin for years and was always jealous of lads I used to know up there from all around the country (further away than Barrowhouse!) telling me about travelling down to train with there clubs, these guys had an incentive because there were good structures in place and good sessions to attend. The average guy from around here who travels down to train in February will arrive in a poorly lit field, with 8 or 9 other lads - on a good night! - training will start late, will be badly organised, and after a while he will ask why he is bothering? Next thing he won't, he'll stay where he is. I suppose it's like the chicken and the egg. The onus is on all players to either play and train PROPERLY or not bother at all. That's the only way we will make any real progress at Intermediate football. | |
