Dear Shay Greetings from Sydney. I am Maurice Whelan, Dom and Kieran and Anthony’s brother. I visited the Barrowhouse GAA website and read the history of the club and the players who made it to the county team. I’m not sure if this fits in your section but it might be considered part of the history of the club. You be the judge. I played for Barrowhouse in the late 60’ with John Langton and Terry Giltrap and that vintage. I left to live in London in 1971 where I played for Garryowen GAA. When Laois won their first (and only?) all-Ireland J.F. title in 1973 I was on the field. The game was played in New Eltham in London. I wasn’t however playing for Laois; I was on the London team. I was picked as a sub weeks before and four days before the match was told I was playing. One of the London stars, Portlaois man Mike Doran had gone back to Laois and played in a club game there and made himself illegal. So I got my big chance and enjoyed it. I did what good corner-backs do; keep their opposite number in check. I was marking their ace corner-forward Danny Doogue from Graiguecullen. He was taken off at half-time! I got a mention in The Nationalist on Oct 5 1973. I have a copy here with me as I write. The piece reads: “Drafted into the side when his fellow county man Mike Doran cried off, Maurice Whelan (Barrowhouse) had a capital game at left-full back for London.” Nice to see the club is still going strong. All the best Maurice mwhelan@bigpond.com

good job there is a junior c team, and not just for old men and kids this year i hope, theres a load of big strong (& lazy) 20-30 year olds around the place who should be playing football, if these lads put in a small bit of effort we would actually win the junior c
