Match reports from the 2008 season;
Barrowhouse bow of the championship
Barrowhouse bowed out of this years intermediate championship but can hold their heads high after a spirited performance against Portlaoise last night (Aug 20). For those who wondered if we could compete at this level there was plenty of evidence to show that indeed we could. The team as a whole improved their overall performance and were unlucky not to have come away with a win, a point which was also made by some of the Portlaoise followers.
Roger Grufferty set the tone early with some thundering tackles and worked tirelessly to gain posession. He was well supported by midfield, Mikey Langton at centre back and also James O'Meara and Martin Murphy in the half forward line. However an extra bit of composure in front of goals on a few occasions would probably have seen us through, as a number of chances went a begging in the first half.
With the scores tied at 0-3 each at half time a goal was always going to be crucial. Unfortunately it fell to Portlaoise when a misplaced clearance was dispatched past a helpless Karl. This was to prove to be the crucial score in very tight second half. Portlaoise ran out winners on a score line of 1-6 to 0-5.
Apart from those already mentioned others who shone were the full back line who were very tight all game, Joe Murphy worked hard but was the attention of most of the Portlaoise defence.
Team;
Karl Fitzgerald, Tom McDonald, Kevin Phelan, Tom Page, Mike Murphy, Mikey Langton, Shay Phelan, James Malone, Sean Langton, Martin Murphy, Roger Grufferty, James O'Meara, Kevin Langton, Joe Murphy, Stevie Langton. Junior C Semi-final; Barrowhouse 1-11 Ballyfin 1-11(AET)
What a game! This game had everything comebacks, great scores, controversy, tension and extra-time. Full credit to both teams on what was a tight and skillful played in a good sporting manner. Ballyfin got off to a flyer and were 1-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. However Barrowhouse rallied for the rest of the first half and a point from James O’Meara followed by 1-1 from “young” Mike Brennan had the teams level at half time. The second half was a tight affair with the lead changing hands on several occasions, however Barrowhouse seemed to be on course for victory when Kieran Murphy and Declan Keville kicked Barrowhouse two points in front with five minutes to go. However back came Ballyfin and when a shot that seemed to be heading to the net went over the bar questions were asked if indeed the ball had gone through the net. After a few minutes consultation a point was awarded which left a point between the teams which Ballyfin duly scored from the kick out.
So for the second time in a week Barrowhouse were into extra time. Ballyfin again got off to a flyer but a point from a sideline by Sparks leveled the game again. But anything Sparks could do Ballyfin could do also when another point from a sideline had the visitors one up at the break. Both teams understandably were now very tired and it was no surprise that the only score of the second half was the equalizer by Mike Brennan to bring his tally to 1-3. The replay will be in Ballyfin on Tuesday 22 July at 7.30.
