New team manager appointed
A players meeting has taken place on Sunday 20th of December to discuss plans for the new year. The players were introduced to the new manager for 2010 Joe Dooley who laid out his plans for the season ahead. Joe's back-up team were also appointed with three selectors in Dom Whelan, Richard Davis and Tom Phelan. There seems to be renewed enthusiasm among the players and a call to anyone else who wants to get involved either playing or simply helping out. Best of luck to one and all for 2010.
Laois Stars talk about nutrition
Laois stars Ross Munnelly and Tracy Lalor recently addressed a juvenile meeting on the issue of healthy eating. The meeting which was organised by Ger Daly and Laois coach Donie Brennan aimed to inform players of all ages of the proper type of diet that you should have in order to perform at your best. The meeting which was attended by young and old gave a great insight into how top athletes prepare themselves for their sport. Well done to all for organising such an informative meeting.
AGM 2009
Our AGM was held recently in the old school, chairman Pat Whelan opened the meeting and secretary Paul Kenny read out his report for the year. This was followed by treasurer Dave Kenny's report on the financial year. It was worth noting that for the first time in a number of years we actually made more money than we spent and in the process cleared a number of overhanging debts. This in spite of the fact that we launched a new draw for pitch development during the year. Well done to Dave and all the committee.
A number of discussions then took place concerning the juvenile and adult teams before the election of officers took place. The meeting was also informed of the progress of the new grounds. The chairman informed the attendance that the pitches have been completed (see photos opposite) and all that remains to be done is some landscaping plus some stone has to be laid on the walking track. The meeting closed with a minutes silence for deceased members.
Phase 1 of grounds development almost complete
The recent spell of good weather has led to a dramatic change in the appearance of our new grounds. The muddy clay surface has been replaced with one of dry sand after hundreds of tonnes of sea sand have been laid on the pitch surface. After being held up for over a month by bad weather not a minute has been wasted over the last couple of weeks. Extensive drainage work has been completed prior to the arrival of the sand, the juvenile pitch has been levelled and reseeded and the entire grounds have been fenced. Seeding of the main pitch is due to start on week beginning October 5th. All going well we should have a state of the art facility for years to come.
St.Josephs/Barrowhouse u-14 claim title
Well done to the lads on the under 14 team who claimed the B championship defeating St. Pauls in the final. The lads came back from being five points down at half time to win by a single point on a score line of 3-7 to St Pauls 4-3. No less than six players were involved with four starting, the lads involved were Brian Daly, Eanna Burke, Andrew and James Baldwin, Conor Breathnach and Marcus O'Leary. Congratulations to one and all on a job well done.
2009 Field day
At the second time of asking the annual field day went ahead on Sunday 13th September in glorious sunshine. Great games, a big crowd, loads of food and plenty of attractions ensured that both young and old had a great day. Over €2,500 was raised on the day. Many thanks to all the teams who participated, the organisers and all those who ran stalls, shops or supervised. Events can't go ahead unless there is plenty of help from everyone. Again well done, already looking forward to 2010.
Ciara plays in Croke Park
Well done and congratulations to Ciara Burke who played at half time in the All-Ireland Semi-final between Kerry and Meath. Hopefully it was the first of many appearances at headquarters.
Juniors A's bow out in Quarter Final
Despite a very brave effort the junior A team lost a very tight battle with Graiguecullen in the quarter finals. Defence has been the cornerstone of the team all year and again this was a very good performance in that regard however our Achilles heel all year has been a lack of confidence in front of goal. Despite playing into a strong breeze in the first we found ourselves trailing by four points at the interval. A great point on the restart from Emmet Malone reduced the deficit to three further points from Emmet Joe Murphy and Charlie Dunne were traded with three points from Graigue. With five minutes to go there was still only three points between the teams with Barrowhouse pressing but two breakaway points from Graigue stretched the lead to five. A further point near the end left a flattering scoreline in favour of the winners.
Final score: Graiguecullen 0-13 Barrowhouse 0-7
Team: Karl Fitzgerald, Sean Langton, Tom Mcdonald, Tom Page, Paul Kenny, Shay Phelan, Luke Malone, Emmet Malone, Joe Murphy, Darren O'Keefe, Mikey Langton, Martin Murphy, James Brennan, Declan Keville, Mike Murphy, . Subs; martin Langton, Sean O'Keefe, Charlie Dunne, James Brennan.
Minors claim League final victory
MINOR A FOOTBALL LEAGUE FINAL
ST. JOSEPH’S/ BARROWHOUSE 1-14 GRAIGUECULLEN 0-8
AN advertisement for 13 a-side football, that’s exactly how you could describe the first half of this encounter. Lately, the talk at football matches centres on the negativity of teams in this year’s All-Ireland series. The implementation of 13-aside should be seriously considered because it would cut out some of the elements of the game that are causing much frustration.
Only the fittest and most skillful players excel in such an environment and it certainly improves the game as a spectacle for supporters.
On a wet Thursday evening, St. Josephs’ settled quickest and when Brendan Hickey intercepted Conor Byrne’s hand pass, a point followed.
Graigue hit back with a point from Barry Regan after five minutes but they would soon be a goal down. An explosive run from Micheál Fleming created the space for Brendan Hickey and his shot cannoned off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
A free from Paul Kingston and a point from Gavin George stretched Joseph’s advantage but their lead was soon reduced to a goal after frees from Daryl Hayden and Robbie Moran.
However, points from Hickey, Joey Devoy and Kingston put six between the sides as entering the final ten minutes of the half.
Graigue responded with a free from Moran but Joseph’s would close out the half with five unanswered points courtesy of Joey Devoy (2), Emmett Malone, Kingston and Gavin George.
This left the half time score at 1-11 to 0-4 and it was going to take a comeback of enormous proportions for Graiguecullen to get back into this one.
The second half was an entirely different affair from the exciting and free flowing football that we witnessed from Josephs’ in the first. The reason could have been fatigue, but with the sizeable lead that they had, there was no real need for them to push men forward in numbers like they had been doing. St. Josephs’ got the first three points of the half with two coming from Gavin George and one for Emmett Malone.
With ten minutes remaining the game was truly over but Graigue rallied and two points each from Paddy Branagan and Jimmy Bolton put a bit of respectability on the scoreboard but, in truth, they had been outplayed from start to finish by a far superior outfit.
ST. JOSEPHS’/BARROWHOUSE: Dermot Kelly; Tom Paige, Dan Dunne, Luke Malone; Mark George, James Brennan, Emmett Malone (.-.); Martin Murphy, Brendan Hickey (.-.); Paul Kingston (.-., .f), Gavin George (.-.), Micheál Fleming; Joey Devoy (.-.). Subs: Jason Campion for Devoy (..mins).
Poor finishing costs Juniors
Barrowhouse Junior A team fell to a disappointing defeat on Sunday to Mountmellick. Poor shooting from play and frees cost Barrowhouse dearly as we were clearly the better team on the day. However having played with a strong breeze Barrowhouse only managed to score 0-4 in the first half and led only by two points.
The turning point of the game came mid way through the second half when a shot for a point rebounded off a post to a Mountmellick forward who duly put the ball in the net. this put Mountmellick in front by a point. Barrowhouse equalised with a point from a Joe Murphy free but Mountmellick then converted a 45 to take the lead again. This was to prove the crucial score.
Final score Barrowhouse 0-6 Mountmellick 1-4.
Team: Karl Fitzgerald, Tom Mcdonald, Kevin Phelan, Tom Page, Paul Kenny, Sean Langton, Luke Malone, Emmet Malone, Shay Phelan, Darren O'Keefe, Mike Murphy, Joe Murphy, Martin Murphy, Conor Barry, Mikey Langton. Subs; martin Langton, Sean O'Keefe, Declan Keville, James Brennan, David Brennan, Eamon Brennan
